“The Big Room” September 11, 2010

We got our new furniture in a week or two ago for our formal living room/studio, which we have just started calling “the big room.” I had my first session in there this morning since we got the furniture. Phillip put up shades and curtains today. It looks so much better in there now. I moved the furniture from how I originally had it. I think I like the current arrangement, for now at least. Here are a few pictures of how it looks now. I guess we’ll get a rug one of these day but I’m not sure about that. It’s much easier to move the furniture all over place for a shoot without a rug. The boys totally love this purple couch.

Here are a couple of pictures from the session this morning. I’ll have more up on my photoblog later but they’re not up there yet.

So I ordered some furniture the other day from Urban Outfitters for our “formal” living room/studio. The word “formal” just doesn’t really fit us and it doesn’t really fit this furniture either. I decided to find some pieces that I really like and that would work well in photos and not worry a whole lot if they go together or not. So this is what I decided on. I’m very excited about it. This room in our house will serve as a sort of sitting area and a room where I can do newborn and small family photography. I’ll keep my eyes open for other cool things to go in this room but I’m determined to only buy things that I love. So here is the aubergine fainting sofa, green paisley chair, pom pom ottoman, and a mid-century coffee table. I’m going to order some canvases of our family soon to put behind the sofa…I think. Still a little iffy on that. And I still need help figuring out what to put on the windows.

So…what do you think? Maybe a little weird for some folks but I think it’s going to look great.

We spent a chunk of Wednesday, Thursday, and today sprucing up our kitchen. It wasn’t “bad” before. It just wasn’t us. The cutesy wallpaper and yellow paint to match the counters just made me feel kind of icky inside. Our friends Cindy and Andrea stopped in to help out. We couldn’t have gotten it done so quickly without their help. Thanks! So here are a couple of before pics.

This is the color scheme that I pretty much haphazardly decided on the day before we started painting. That’s just how I roll.

Here’s one during the wallpaper removal process. Mikey “helped” Cindy. And no, I’m not wearing white granny panties up higher than my waistband. That’s just how white my flesh is. I wish I could tell you that it were granny panties. Anyway…

Today Phillip and I (mostly Phillip) refinished the drawer and cabinet pulls to match the light fixtures that are already in our kitchen. Before they were a lovely gold. After they are kind of a dark bronze. This is exciting stuff right here.

And here is the finished kitchen/dining room. It’s finished but we still need curtains and other accessories. That room through the kitchen is my office. It’s the same yellow that the dining room was before. It looks like it’s some awful green in this picture. It’s just the light. That room will get a new coat of paint soon.

We’re really happy with how it turned out. I’m envisioning a big dark red framed mirror on the wall in the dining room and maybe some kind of dark red curtains of some sort. In the next couple of years we hope to pulverize the 1950’s yellow tile and replace it with granite or quartz. Some people may prefer the before pictures and not understand why we changed it. And if that’s the case then I’m sure you can find some quaint wallpaper with flowers on it at Lowe’s that will make your heart skip a beat. The previous yellow is called “sunbeam.”

So this morning I got to use our new house for pictures! I’m so excited to be able to do this. We never had the room or the natural light at the other house. So here are a few pictures of the bare bones portable set up that we have at this time.

And here’s one that Phillip took of me photographing little Tyler. I hope you enjoy looking at my armpit.

And here is the finished shot that I was taking at that moment.

Pretty cool, huh? You can see more of Tyler’s newborn photos at my business blog.

So we’ve been in the house a little over a week now. Almost everything is put away where it belongs. I emptied a couple more boxes today. There are still a few boxes in the garage that we need to to deal with. Some of them would ideally go in the attic if we could get them up there. There’s practically no storage space in this attic. It feels really good to be almost done with unpacking and putting away. I know us well enough to know that if we didn’t get in gear and get stuff unpacked while the excitement was still fresh that we would just get used to it and it would never get done. And that’s just not okay with me. I do not like living out of boxes. I don’t like seeing boxes. It certainly helps that neither one of have jobs to go to right now and that we’re down one kid. I’m anxious for Jackson to get home and I kind of feel like I’m “nesting” waiting for a new baby. I just want things to be perfect when he gets here. I want him to walk in and instantly feel like he’s home.

So I am finally getting around to blogging about the new house. We’ve been very busy this past week as you can imagine. Monday we closed on both houses and everything went very smoothly. This whole process has gone very smooth for us. We were able to gather enough funds to be able to put down 20% on the new house and avoid PMI. We’re pretty proud of that accomplishment. Go us!

Anyway, here’s some rambling info. about the new house. It’s huge! And we have two bathrooms and that has been awesome! The patio is great and Mikey has been staying out there playing for hours every day. We have a privacy fence so I can actually lay out in the backyard and get some sun, hypothetically speaking of course. The microwave is crazy. We have a garbage disposal, a doorbell, and a garage! These are all things that are totally new to us. It is all just such a wonderful change.

Would you like to see some pictures? Sure you would.

First of all here is the front and back of the house.

We are planning on ditching the cutesy wall paper and yellow paint as soon as possible. We are also planning on getting rid of the yellow tile counter tops and replacing it with granite or quartz. That will take a little more time.

My mom didn’t really have room for this little kid table anymore so she brought it over for us. We need to get some picture up on the wall and a rug. We’re also getting a new tv stand and a coffee table soon.

So that’s it for now. We’ll be getting some new furniture in the next few months. We’ll also be doing quite a bit of painting. We’re so happy about this house! I think we’re still in shock that we’re here and that it’s actually our home. It feels like a dream.

Furniture shopping May 30, 2010

One of the most fun things about buying a new house is getting to go shopping for new stuff for the house. Last week Jack and I went furniture shopping. And here is our new bed!

For now we just bought the bed frame and the skinny tall dresser that you see in the picture. We will probably try to buy the other dresser down the road. This is the first real furniture we’ve ever had for our bedroom. I’m SO EXCITED!!!

And this is Jackson’s bed. Well, I think this is Jackson’s bed but it looks darker in person. Anyway, this is at least similar to Jackson’s bed.

And this is the bedding that we got for Jack’s room.

And this is Mikey’s. We’ll be starting out with Mikey having the bunk beds in his room. I really want to get rid of the bunk beds and get Mikey a regular twin bed in a few months.

There are many more things that we’ll need to get for the new house, but this is a start. Some of those things will just have to wait a few months.
